Sympathy

God on Trial - Sympathy

  1. Jesus _____________ us sympathy can be ___________________.

And their voices were overwhelming. 24 So Pilate decided that what they demanded would be done. (Lk 23:23b–24)
As they led him away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country. They placed the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. (Lk 23:26)
A certain man, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), was passing by on his way in from the country. They forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Mk 15:21)
Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who was a mother to me too. (Ro 16:13)
A large crowd of people was following him, including women who were mourning and wailing for him. (Lk 23:27)
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (Lk 19:38)
41 As he came near, he saw the city and wept over it. 42 He said, “If you, yes you, had only known on this day the things that would bring peace to you. But now, it is hidden from your eyes. 43 In fact, the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. 44 Within your walls, they will dash you and your children to the ground. And within your walls, they will not leave one stone on top of another, because you did not recognize the time when God came to help you.” (Lk 19:41–44)
28 Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 Be sure of this: The days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never gave birth, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these things to the green wood, what will happen to the dry?” (Lk 23:28–31)
3 Indeed, children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb is a reward from him. 4 Sons born during one’s youth are like arrows in the hand of a warrior. 5 How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. (Ps 127:3–5a)
1 The word of the Lord came to me. 2 You are not to marry a wife in this place or to have sons and daughters, 3 because this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters born in this place, about the mothers who bore them, and about the fathers who conceived them in this land: 4 They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned. They will not be buried. They will lie on the ground like manure. They will be devoured by sword and famine, and their carcasses will become food for the birds in the sky and the wild animals in the land. (Je 16:1–4)
Look, Lord, and see! With whom have you dealt so harshly? Should women eat the children they produced, the children they played with on their knee? Should priest and prophet be killed in the Lord’s holy place? (La 2:20)
3 Even jackals offer a breast and nurse their young, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like an ostrich in the wilderness. 4 The baby’s tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth because of thirst. Children ask for bread, but no one shares with them. (La 4:3–4)
The high places of Aven, the sin of Israel, will become unusable. Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars. They will say to the mountains, “Cover us!” and to the hills, “Fall on us!” (Ho 10:8)
I will pour out my wrath on you. I will blow the fire of my fury upon you. I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men, expert destroyers. (Eze 21:31)
Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Armies, says. Because they have said this, I will make my words in your mouth a fire. These people are the wood, and it will burn them up. (Je 5:14)

EHV Study Bible: The Romans were putting an innocent man (green wood) to death; how much worse would the situation be when God allows them to act against unbelieving Jerusalem (dry wood) in 70 AD and on Judgment Day.

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I have wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Lk 13:34)
  1. Jesus’ _________ for sinners moved him to _________ sinners.

32 Two other men, who were criminals, were led away with Jesus to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. 34a Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Lk 23:32–34a)
Therefore I will give him an allotment among the great, and with the strong he will share plunder, because he poured out his life to death, and he let himself be counted with rebellious sinners. He himself carried the sin of many, and he intercedes for the rebels. (Is 53:12)
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, because theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Mt 5:10)

Points to Ponder

  1. What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

  2. Have the words “poor me” ever crossed your mind or lip? If, what were the circumstances? Has what you heard today from Jesus changed how you view the words “poor me”? If so, how?
