Testimony

God on Trial: Testimony

  1. A ___________ or a _________________ court?

Many testified falsely against him, but their testimonies did not agree. (Mk 14:56)
59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60a They found none (Mt 26:59–60a)
60c Finally two came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ ” (Mt 26:60c–61)
“I place you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God!” (Mt 26:63b)
“It is as you have said. But I tell you, soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mt 26:64)
  1. A ___________________ trial.

Jesus said to him, “Amen I tell you: Tonight before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.” (Mt 26:34)
Peter said to him, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you.” (Mt 26:35a)
“You were also with Jesus the Galilean.” (Mt 26:69b)
“This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth” (Mt 26:71b)
73 After a little while those who stood by came and said to Peter, “Surely you are also one of them because even your accent gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!” Just then the rooster crowed. (Mt 26:73–74)
60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!” At that very moment, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord’s word, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today you will deny me three times.” (Lk 22:60–61)
He went outside and wept bitterly. (Lk 22:62)
“It is as you have said. But I tell you, soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mt 26:64)
13 I kept watching the night visions, and there, in the clouds of heaven, I saw one like a son of man coming. He came to the Ancient of Days, and he was brought before him. 14 To him was given dominion, honor, and a kingdom. All peoples, nations, and languages will worship him. His dominion is an eternal dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed. (Da 7:13–14)
Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? See, you have just heard the blasphemy!” (Mt 26:65)

Blasphemy is to _________ of God in an _________ or ______________________ way.

“It is as you have said. But I tell you, soon you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Mt 26:64)
Look, he is coming with clouds, and every eye will see him, including those who pierced him. And all the nations of the earth will mourn because of him. Yes. Amen. (Re 1:7)
Professor Deutschlander; You may see me now in shame and disgrace, just as the Scriptures prophesied of me. But the time is coming when you will see me in my human nature as the very embodiment of the almighty power of God; for that's what God's right hand is, his power, and I am that power! Where will you be when that power comes?
“Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Mt 25:34b)
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that is in you. (1 Pe 3:15b)

Points to Ponder

  1. What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

  2. Have you ever done anything like Peter did when he was on trial in the courtyard? ... If so, why do you think you did this? Look up 1 John 1:9 and react to those words.

  3. Look up Luke 22:6. Based on what we discuss in the sermon, how do they apply to you?

  4. Look closely at 1 Peter 3:15b. What do they mean to you?
