The Lenten Museum: The Crown of Thorns

Simon Peter and another disciple kept following Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest, so he went into the high priest's courtyard with Jesus. (Jn 18:15)
26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son!" 27 Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother!" And from that time this disciple took her into his own home. (Jn 19:26–27)
Wenzel writes, "It is not a pleasant picture, but one of bigotry hatred, mob-justice, of vacillation, cowardice, injustice, a miscarriage of justice."

1.    Our King Jesus always has _________ and always will _____ in _______________.

Early in the morning, the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium. They did not enter the Praetorium themselves, so that they would not become ceremonially unclean. (They wanted to be able to eat the Passover meal.) (Jn 18:28)
The Praetorium was the headquarters of the Roman garrison in Jerusalem. It likely was located at the Antonia Fortress at the northwest corner of the temple complex. This is the traditional location and is the start of the Via Dolorosa (Way of the Cross). Some believe that the Praetorium was at the former palace of Herod the Great on the western edge of the city or at another location. On this map Herod's Palace indicates a possible location of the palace used by Herod Antipas during Jesus' trial if the old western palace was being used as the Praetorium.
29 So Pilate went out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?" 30 They answered him, "If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you." (Jn 18:29–30)
Pilate told them, "Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law." The Jews said, "It's not legal for us to put anyone to death." (Jn 18:31)
This happened so that the statement Jesus had spoken indicating what kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled. (Jn 18:32)
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up. (Jn 3:14)
Pilate went back into the Praetorium and summoned Jesus. He asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" (Jn 18:33)
Teacher, rebuke your disciples! (Lk 19:39b)
Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" (Jn 18:34)
Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?" (Jn 18:35)
Jesus replied, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight so that I would not be handed over to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here." (Jn 18:36)
"You are a king then?" Pilate asked. Jesus answered, "I am, as you say, a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." (Jn 18:37)
The incarnation is this: At the moment that the eternal son of God entered into the _________ of the virgin Mary, he took on a human _____________, that is, a human _________ and _________.
For the wages of sin is death. (Ro 3:23a) "What is truth?" Pilate said to him. After he said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no basis for a charge against him." (Jn 18:38)

2.    Our King Jesus wore a ___________ of _____________.

27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole cohort of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. (Mt 27:27–28)
29 They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, knelt in front of him, and mocked him by saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" 30 They spit on him, took the staff, and hit him repeatedly on his head. (Mt 27:29–30)

He did not commit a sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth" (1 Pe 2:22)

Points to Ponder

1)    What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

2)    Do you ever feel like Jesus has lost control? If so, why?

3)    What are the two reasons Jesus had to have a human nature?

4)    How do you respond when the world mocks Jesus?
