1.    The disciples _________ provide the _________ Jesus asked for.

36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane. He told his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray." 37 He took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be sorrowful and distressed. (Mt 26:36–37)
Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to the point of death. Stay here, and keep watch with me." (Mt 26:38)
He went a little farther, fell on his face, and prayed. He said, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." (Mt 26:39)
4 Surely he was taking up our weaknesses, and he was carrying our sufferings. We thought it was because of God that he was stricken, smitten, and afflicted, 5 but it was because of our rebellion that he was pierced. He was crushed for the guilt our sins deserved. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. (Is 53:4–5)
40 He came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So, were you not able to stay awake with me for one hour? 41 Watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Mt 26:40–41)
... he found them sleeping as a result of sorrow (Lk 22:45b)
Satan has asked to have you all, so that he may sift you as wheat. (Lk 22:31b)
This night you will all fall away on account of me. (Mt 26:31a)
He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to pass from me unless I drink it, may your will be done." (Mt 26:42)
Again he returned and found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. (Mt 26:43)
44 He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time. He said the same words as before. 45 Then he returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise. Let us go. Look, my betrayer is near." (Mt 26:44–46)

2.    Judas has a _________ to betray Jesus.

While Jesus was still speaking, suddenly Judas (one of the Twelve) arrived. With him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. (Mt 26:47)
So Judas took the company of soldiers and some guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees, and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. (Jn 18:3)
48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign: "The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him." 49 Immediately he went to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. (Mt 26:48–49)

3.    Jesus is still in _______________.

4b "Who are you looking for?" 5 "Jesus the Nazarene," they replied. "I am he," Jesus told them. Judas, the betrayer, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus told them, "I am he," they backed away and fell to the ground. (Jn 18:4–6)
Then Jesus asked them again, "Who are you looking for?" "Jesus the Nazarene," they said. (Jn 18:7)
8 "I told you that I am he," Jesus replied. "So if you are looking for me, let these men go." 9 This was to fulfill the statement he had spoken: "I did not lose any of those you have given me." (Jn 18:8–9)
55 Jesus said to the crowd, "Have you come out to arrest me with swords and clubs as if I were a robber? Day after day I was sitting in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But all this has happened so that the writings of the prophets would be fulfilled." (Mt 26:55–56a)
Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. (Mt 26:56b)
Then the company of soldiers, their commander, and the Jewish guards arrested Jesus and bound him. (Jn 18:12)

Points to Ponder

1)    What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

2)    Why was Jesus' struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane so difficult?

3)    Respond to this statement, " Carelessness, indifference, lack of watchfulness, failure to pray, have caused the downfall of many a Christian."

4)    Has there been a time in your life that you thought Jesus was not in control? How did that work out in the end? Did you learn anything from this experience?
