Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, the hometown of Lazarus, who had died, the one Jesus raised from the dead. (Jn 12:1)
9 A large crowd of the Jews learned that he was there. They came not only because of Jesus, but also to see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus too, 11 because it was on account of him that many of the Jews were leaving them and believing in Jesus. (Jn 12:9–11)
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 telling them, "Go to the village ahead of you. Immediately you will find a donkey tied there along with her colt. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you are to say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once." (Mt 21:1–3)
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found things just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?" 34 They said, "The Lord needs it." 35 Then they brought the colt to Jesus. (Lk 19:32–35)
4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: 5 Tell the daughter of Zion: Look, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Mt 21:4–5)
The Greek word πραΰς translated "humble," means not being overly ___________________ by a sense of __________ self-importance. It is translated gentle, humble, considerate, or meek.
... there is no one who does good, note even one. (Ps 53:3b)
8 Indeed, it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—9 not by works, so that no one can boast. (Eph 2:8–9)
As distant as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our rebellious acts from us. (Ps 103:12)
2. Jesus ___________________ honor like no ___________.
6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their outer clothing on them, and he sat on it. (Mt 21:6–7)
They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their garments on it, and Jesus sat on it. (Mk 11:7)
Conservatively, Jesus fulfilled at least 300 prophecies in His earthly ministry. (https://www.gotquestions.org/prophecies-of-Jesus.html)
A very large crowd spread their outer clothing on the road. Others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them out on the road. (Mt 21:8)
Taking palm branches, they went out to meet him. (Jn 12:13a)
Each man quickly took his cloak. Then they placed them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the ram’s horn and said, 'Jehu is king!' (2 Ki 9:13)
The crowds who went in front of him and those who followed kept shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! (Mt 21:9)
The word "Hosanna" is a transliteration of the Hebrew expression
הוֹשִׁ֘יעָ֥ה נָּ֑א from Psalm 118:25. The express means, "_____________ _________ _____."
25 O Lord, please save us now. O Lord, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord. (Ps 118:25-26)
2 While John was in prison, he heard about the things Christ was doing. He sent two of his disciples 3 to ask him, "Are you the Coming One or should we wait for someone else?" (Mt 11:2–3)
As he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, for all the miracles they had seen. (Lk 19:37)
Points to Ponder
1) What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?
2) When you look at your life, do you struggle with breaking the Fifth Commandment? If so, why do you think that is? What can you do to change your behavior?
3) How does God turn things upside down on Palm Sunday?
