Live in the Light

Ephesians: Live in the Light

  1. Imitate _______: Walk in the ___________ of love.

1 Therefore, be imitators of God as his dearly loved children. 2 And walk in love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Eph 5:1–2)
He also said, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mk 14:36)
It does not keep a record of wrongs. (1 Co 13:5b)
3 But do not let sexual immorality, any kind of impurity, or greed even be mentioned among you, as is proper for saints. 4 Obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking are also out of place. Instead, give thanks. (Eph 5:3–4)
Certainly you are aware of this: No immoral, impure, or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, who is God. (Eph 5:5)
Let no one deceive you with empty words. It is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. (Eph 5:6)
So do not share in what they do. (Eph 5:7)
Do not be deceived! “Keeping bad company corrupts good morals.” (1 Co 15:33)
19 Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:19–20)
  1. Shine as _________________ of light: Pursue what _______________ the Lord.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, 9 for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. 10 Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord, 11 and do not participate in fruitless deeds of darkness. Instead, expose them. (Eph 5:8–11)

A man is _________ when what he _____ and _________ is admirable and beneficial.

A man is __________________ when his _________________ and _______________ conform to God’s standards.

___________is there when what a man _________ agrees with what is in his heart and what he _________ agrees with what he says.

12 For it is shameful even to mention the things that are done by people in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes things visible. (Eph 5:12–13)
Therefore it is said, “Awake, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Eph 5:14)
The world … hates me, because I testify about it, that its works are evil. (Jn 7:7)
  1. Walk _____________: Make the _________ of the time.

15 Consider carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise people, but as wise people. 16 Make the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 For this reason, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Eph 5:15–17)
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith. (Ga 6:10)
18 And do not get drunk on wine, which causes you to lose control. Instead, be filled with the Spirit 19 by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord), 20 by always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Eph 5:18–20)

Points to Ponder

  1. What is one thing that stood out for you from this week’s message?
  2. Verse 2 calls us to “walk in love, as Christ loved us.” What might that look like in your relationships this week?
  3. Paul warns against things like sexual immorality, greed, and coarse joking. Why do you think he connects these to darkness?
  4. Paul says, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” What does this transformation mean to you personally?
  5. Verse 10 encourages us to “try to learn what pleases the Lord.” How can we do this in our daily decision-making?
  6. Are there any areas in your life where God’s light might be calling you to make a change?
  7. How can songs, thankfulness, and mutual encouragement help us walk in the light together?
