Witnessing Like Jesus

Overheard: Witnessing Like Jesus

  1. Every _________________________ is an opportunity to share the _____________.

1 Jesus found out that the Pharisees had heard he was making and baptizing more disciples than John, 2though it was not Jesus himself who was baptizing but his disciples. 3 So he left Judea and went back again to Galilee. 4 He had [δεῖ (dei)] to go through Samaria. (Jn 4:1–4)
This is why the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he was not merely breaking the Sabbath, but was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. (Jn 5:18)
Do not be surprised when I tell you that you must [δεῖ (dei)] be born from above. (Jn 3:7)
Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must [δεῖ (dei)] be lifted up, (Jn 3:14)
(They still did not yet understand the Scripture that he must [δεῖ (dei)] rise from the dead.) (Jn 20:9)
5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the piece of land Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there. Then Jesus, being tired from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (Jn 4:5–6)
14 It was about the sixth hour on the Preparation Day for the Passover. Pilate said to the Jews, “Here is your king!” 15a They shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” (Jn 19:14–15a)
He came to what was his own, yet his own people did not accept him. (Jn 1:11)
7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory, because the wedding of the Lamb has come. His bride has made herself ready, 8 and she was given bright, clean, fine linen to wear. (In fact, the fine linen is the “not guilty” verdicts pronounced on the saints.) (Re 19:7–8)
  1. Expect people to be _________________.

7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone into town to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) (Jn 4:7–9)
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” she said, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this living water? 12 You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his animals.” 13 Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty ever again. Rather, the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water, bubbling up [ἅλλομαι (hal-lo-mai)] to eternal life.”  15 “Sir, give me this water,” the woman said to him, “so I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” (Jn 4:10–15)
3 Jesus replied, “Amen, Amen, I tell you: Unless someone is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” (Jn 3:3–4)
21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” 23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” 24Martha replied, “I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the Last Day.” (Jn 11:21–24)
“Sir,” she said, “you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is deep. So where do you get this living water? (Jn 4:11)
Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. (Is 12:3)
[The Lord said] For my people have committed two evils: They have abandoned me, the spring of living water, and they have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that hold no water! (Je 2:13)
37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and called out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38 As the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from deep within the person who believes in me.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive. For the Holy Spirit had not yet come, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. (Jn 7:37–39)
Jumping up, he stood and began to walk. He entered the temple courts with them, walking, jumping [ἅλλομαι (hal-lo-mai)], and praising God. (Ac 3:8)
Paul said in a loud voice, “Stand up on your feet!” And the man jumped up [ἅλλομαι (hal-lo-mai)] and began to walk. (Ac 14:10)
They will not hunger, and they will not thirst, and neither scorching wind nor sun will strike them, because the one who shows them mercy will lead them. He will guide them beside springs of water. (Is 49:10)
15 Because of this they are in front of the throne of God, and they serve him day and night in his temple. He who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. 16 They will never be hungry or thirsty ever again. The sun will never beat upon them, nor will any scorching heat, 17 for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd. He will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. (Re 7:15–17)
  1. Always point people to ___________.

16 Jesus told her, “Go, call your husband, and come back here.” 17 “I have no husband,” the woman answered. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say, ‘I have no husband.’ 18 In fact, you have had five husbands, and the man you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true.” (Jn 4:16–18)
He told me everything I ever did. (Jn 4:39b)
19 “Sir,” the woman replied, “I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews insist that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.” (Jn 4:19–20)
21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will not worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know. We worship what we do know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 But a time is coming and now is here when the real worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for those are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (Jn 4:21–24)
Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again” (Jn 2:19)
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (the one called Christ). “When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” (Jn 4:25)

Points to Ponder

  2. What is significant about Jesus speaking to a Samaritan woman? How does this break social and religious barriers of the time?
  3. Jesus speaks of “living water.” What do you think He means by this?
  4. The woman at the well initially misunderstands Jesus' offer of living water. In what ways do we sometimes misunderstand what Jesus offers us?
  5. Jesus meets the woman where she is and invites her into a deeper understanding of who He is. How has Jesus met you in your life?
  6. Jesus calls us to worship in spirit and truth. What does this kind of worship look like in daily life?
