Jesus' lineage is broken down into three different periods in the life of Israel.

  1. Abraham to ___________

  2. David to the _____________________ ___________

  3. The _____________ from exile to ___________

The Greek word γεννάω (gennaō) means to ___________________, bring into being. In our text it is translated "father of." This word does not always mean ___________________ ancestor, but can also mean ________________________ or a more ______________ male ancestor.

It turned out that Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord killed him. (Ge 38:7)
Go to your brother's wife. Perform your duty for her as the brother of her deceased husband and provide offspring for your brother. (Ge 38:8)
Judah said to himself, 'I do not want him to die like his brothers.' (Ge 38:11b)
By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with the unbelievers, because she welcomed the spies in peace. (Heb 11:31)
In the same way also, wasn't Rahab the prostitute shown to be righteous by works when she welcomed the spies and sent them out another way? (Jas 2:25)
Run for your life! Don't look behind you, and don't stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, so that you are not swept away! (Ge 19:17)
Meanwhile, Rehoboam son of Solomon was king in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he ruled for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city the Lord had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put his Name there. The name of Rehoboam's mother was Na'amah the Ammonite. (1 Ki 14:21)
The younger also gave birth to a son and called his name Ben Ammi. He is the father of the people of Ammon to this day. (Ge 19:38)
Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the detestable god of Moab, on the hill east of Jerusalem and for Molek, the detestable god of the Ammonites. (1 Ki 11:7)

  1. ... is the ultimate _________.

[Jesus said] 28 "Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Mt 11:28–30)
Luther, "When sin has been forgiven and the conscience has been liberated from the burden and the sting of sin, then a Christian can bear everything easily. Because everything within is sweet and pleasant, he willingly does and suffers everything" (AE 26:133).
So altogether there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen generations from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen generations from the Babylonian exile to Christ. (Mt 1:17)
God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it he rested from all his work of creation that he had done. (Ge 2:3)

7 x 7 = 49

Year of Jubilee ... All the slaves were to be freed and all debts were to be forgiven; all the land and all the people were to have rest from their weariness and from their burdens.

3 x 14 ... (2 x 7) + (2 x 7) + (2 x 7) ... 7 + 7 +7 +7 +7 +7

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son to be born of a woman, so that he would be born under the law. (Ga 4:4)

Tim Keller, "In Jesus you stop having to prove yourself because you know it doesn't really matter in the end whether you are a failure or a king. All you need is God's grace, and you can have it, in spite of your failures. After you know him, you want to live your life to please him; but you don't have to clean up your life in order to know him as Savior, and that brings rest inwardly."

Points to Ponder

  1. What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

  2. How has examining Jesus' genealogy in packed your faith?

  3. Why does Jesus say, "... my burden is light" (Mt 11:30)? How does this give you rest?
