God on Trial – Vindication

To be vindicated means to be cleared of ___________ or to be proven ___________.

  1. Easter is Vindication for ___________.

61 Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” Jesus said. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his robes and said, “Why do we need any more witnesses? 64 You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?” They all condemned him as being worthy of death. (Mk 14:61–64)
… he handed him over to be crucified. (Mk 15:15)
29 Those who passed by ridiculed him, shaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself! Come down from the cross!”  31 In the same way, the chief priests along with the experts in the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said. “He cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross so that we may see and believe!” Those who were crucified with him also insulted him. (Mk 15:29–32)
Jesus’ mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene (Jn 19:25a)
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses (Mk 15:47a)
… the disciples were together behind locked doors because of their fear of the Jews. (Jn 20:19b)
2 Very early on the first day of the week, at sunrise, they went to the tomb. 3 They were saying to each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance to the tomb for us?” (Mk 16:2–3)
… spices so they could go and anoint Jesus. (Mk 16:1b)
When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. (Mk 16:4)
5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 He said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’ (Mk 16:5–7)
They went out and hurried away from the tomb, trembling and perplexed. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. (Mk 16:8)
… to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time. (1 Cor 15:6)
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mt 27:46)
We all have gone astray like sheep. Each of us has turned to his own way, but the LORD has charged all our guilt to him. (Is 53:6)
God made him, who did not know sin, to become sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him. (2 Co 5:21)
It is finished. (Jn 19:30b)
  1. Easter is Vindication for _____.

Adam lived 130 years, and he became the father of a son in his own likeness, according to his own image. (Ge 5:3a)
Certainly, I was guilty when I was born. I was sinful when my mother conceived me. (Ps 51:5)
So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, so also death spread to all people because all sinned. (Ro 5:12)
For the wages of sin is death. (Ro 6:23a)
… but the undeserved gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Ro 6:23b)
He was handed over to death because of our trespasses and was raised to life because of our justification. (Ro 4:25)
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then it also follows that those who fell asleep in Christ perished. 19 If our hope in Christ applies only to this life, we are the most pitiful people of all. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came by a man, the resurrection of the dead also is going to come by a man. 22 For as in Adam they all die, so also in Christ they all will be made alive. (1 Co 15:17–22)

  2. Evaluate this statement; Against the backdrop of this brief life, our sinful choices appear like enlarged shadows, our every mistake magnified in our minds. How we have let down our Savior!

  3. How does Romans 4:25 and 1 Corinthians 15:17-22 help you cope with the statement in Question 2?

  4. Are there any of the Scriptural passages today in the sermon that really speak to you? If so, which one(s) and why?
