Christmas
Glory to God!
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother, Mary [Μαρία (Ma-rē-a)], was pledged [μνηστεύομαι (m-nā-stoi-o-mai)] in marriage to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her husband, was a righteous [δίκαιος (dē-kī-ōs)] man and did not want to disgrace [δειγματίζω (dīg-ma-tē-zō)] her. So he decided to divorce her privately. (Mt 1:18–19)

_______________ (Prophets)

Former Prophets: Joshua, Judges, Samuel (as one book), Kings (as one book)
Latter Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Twelve Minor Prophets (counted as one book)
_______________ (Writings)
This is a collection of various books including:
Psalms, Proverbs, Job
The "Five Scrolls" (Megillot): Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther
Daniel, Ezra-Nehemiah (as one book), Chronicles (as one book)
2 The Lord was with Joseph, and he became successful. He served in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3 His master saw that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made everything that he touched a success. (Ge 39:2–3)
[Joseph said] He has no one in this house greater than I am, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a great evil and sin against God? (Ge 39:9)
19 Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? 20 You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring this to pass and to keep many people alive, as it is this day.” (Ge 50:19–20)
_______of the book of Genesis is about the life of Joseph: _____ out of _____ chapters cover the life of Joseph.
The “Mary’s” in Jesus life:
_________ ___________________ - One of Jesus's most devoted followers who supported his ministry. She witnessed the crucifixion and was the first person to see Jesus after his resurrection, when he appeared to her at the empty tomb.
_________ _____ _______________ - Sister of Martha and Lazarus, who lived in Bethany. She's known for sitting at Jesus's feet to learn from him while Martha worked, and for anointing Jesus's feet with expensive perfume shortly before his death.
_________, _________ _____ _______________ - Mentioned as standing near the cross with Mary (Jesus's mother) and Mary Magdalene during the crucifixion. She may have been Jesus’ aunt from Joseph’s side of the family or maybe the mother Simeon who was the successor to James as the leader of the church in Jerusalem.
_________, ____________ _____ ___________ _______ ___________ - Present at the crucifixion and at Jesus's tomb. Referred to as “the other Mary” in Matthew’s gospel.
_________, _____________ _____ _________ _________ - Her home in Jerusalem served as a meeting place for early Christians. Peter went to her house after being freed from prison by an angel.
Hebrew: מִרְיָם (mir-yam) [Miriam] … Greek: Μαρία (Ma-rē-a) [Mary]
Then his sister (Miriam) said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a wet nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” (Ex 2:7)
20 Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a hand drum, and all the women followed her with drums and dancing. 21 Miriam sang to them, Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has thrown into the sea. (Ex 15:20–21)
20 But as he was considering these things, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Mt 1:20–21)
The name Joshua [יְהוֹשׁוּעַ (ye-hō-shū-a)] is a combination of the _______ Hebrew words יְהוֹ (ye- hō) which is the _______________ form of God’s personal name the Lord [יהוה (Yahweh/YHWH)] and the _________ שֻׁעַ (shu-a) which means to save, deliver.
Then the Lord commissioned Joshua [יְהוֹשׁוּעַ (ye-hō-shū-a)] son of Nun and said to him: “Be strong and courageous, because you will bring the people of Israel into the land that I have promised to them with an oath, and I will be with you.” (Dt 31:23)
The entire congregation that had returned from the captivity made shelters and stayed in the shelters. From the days of Joshua [יֵשׁוּעַ (ye- shū -a)] son of Nun until that day, the Israelites had not celebrated in this way, because there was very great joy. (Ne 8:17)
The shortened form Yeshua (ye-shū-a) is also the Aramaic form of the name, which is why Jesus' name in his own language would have been Yeshua (ye-shū-a).
Then the Lord commissioned Joshua [Ἰησοῦς (Ē-ā-sous)] son of Nun and said to him: “Be strong and courageous, because you will bring the people of Israel into the land that I have promised to them with an oath, and I will be with you.” (Dt 31:23)
Greek: Ἰησοῦς (Ē-ā-sous) … Latin: Iesus (YEH-soos) … Jesus
Mishnah — _____________ ___________________ holds that when Moses received the written Torah at Mount Sinai, he also received _________ ___________________ (Oral Torah) that explained and elaborated on the written law. The Mishnah represents the codification (systematic organization and writing down) of these oral traditions. This codification was done around 200 CE by Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi (Judah the Prince) in the land of Israel.
The Mishnah has authority, but it's understood as interpretation and application of the Tanakh. Its authority derives from:
-
Being the oral tradition that explains how to practice the written Torah
-
The rabbinic chain of transmission going back (in theory) to Moses
-
Its role in applying biblical law to real-life situations
