Are You Sure That’s What It Says?: Don’t Be a Hater

For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (Jn 3:16)
Stop judging, so that you will not be judged. (Mt 7:1)

EHV Study Bible:

Like the proverbs in the Old Testament book of Proverbs, many of the sayings in this sermon give only a part of the picture, and it is necessary to look at another verse to supply another aspect of the topic. If this is not done, some of the statements might seem to contradict each other. For example, compare the notes on Matthew 5:16 where Jesus said, “Let your light shine in people’s presence, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven,” and in Matthew 6:1 where Jesus said, “Be careful that you do not do your righteous works in front of people, so that they will notice.”

  • Who is Jesus’ _________________?

23 Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread throughout all Syria. People brought to him all who were ill with various diseases and suffering severe pains, the demon-possessed, those who experienced seizures, and the paralyzed. Then he healed them. 25 Large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. (Mt 4:23–25)
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up onto a mountain. When he sat down, his disciples came to him. (Mt 5:1)
  • Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount does not teach us how to be ___________. No, it describes how a believer will want to _________ as a follower in Jesus.

  • In Matthew 7:1 is Jesus commanding us to ___________ judge _______________ else?

1 Stop judging, so that you will not be judged. 2 For with whatever standard you judge, you will be judged, and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you. (Mt 7:1–2)
Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? (Lk 12:57)
Stop judging by outward appearance. Instead make a right judgment. (Jn 7:24)
15 “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his sin just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have regained your brother. 16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And, if he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as an unbeliever or a tax collector. 18 Amen I tell you: Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19 Amen I tell you again: If two of you on earth agree to ask for anything, it will be done for them by my Father who is in heaven. 20 In fact where two or three have gathered together in my name, there I am among them.” (Mt 18:15–20)
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 Jn 4:1)
12 For what business is it of mine to judge people outside the church? Do you not judge those inside? 13 God will judge the people outside the church. (1 Co 5:12–13)
1 Stop judging, so that you will not be judged. 2 For with whatever standard you judge, you will be judged, and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you. (Mt 7:1–2)
  • What _________ of judging does Jesus _____________?

3 Why do you focus on the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the beam that is in your own eye? 4 How will you tell your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ when, in fact, you have a beam in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Mt 7:3–5)
  • Jesus forbids _________________________ judging, ________________________ judging, and attempting to judge _____________.

For the wages of sin is death, but the undeserved gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Ro 6:23)

Points to Ponder

  1. What is one thing that stood out to you from this week's message?

  2. Think about the picture that I showed you today about the parody of the Last Supper. How should a Christian respond to this?

  3. Evaluate this statement: We judge people on based on their actions, but we want to be judged based on our intent.

  4. The Bible calls all Christians to mutually shepherd one another. Look up the following passages and explain what that means: Gal 6:2; Rom 15:14; Heb 3:13; 1 Thess 5:11; Col 3:16; James 5:16; Eph 4:3.

Homework: Jeremiah 27-29
